The NPC Test: What It's Not Telling You
The Near Point of Convergence is one of the simplest tests in optometric practice — but the final measurement may tell us far less than we think.
In this practical live webinar, Robert Lederman uses the NPC test to explore a broader approach to clinical thinking. Rather than focusing only on whether a patient passes or fails, we will look at how the patient performs the test, what that may tell us about everyday visual function, and how those observations can guide further assessment, interpretation and management.
The aim is not to turn general optometrists into binocular vision specialists. It is to show how familiar testing can provide much more useful clinical information — and how that information can help you decide what to do next.

What Will You Learn?
- Why a patient can “pass” a test and still be struggling
- What to observe during NPC beyond the numerical endpoint
- How effort, recovery, fatigue, and compensation can provide valuable clinical information
- How to move from observation to interpretation rather than relying on numbers alone
- How findings can begin to guide practical management decisions
- Achievable first steps for helping appropriate patients without needing to become a specialist
Who Should Attend?
This webinar is designed for general practising optometrists, particularly those who see patients whose symptoms or difficulties are not fully explained by routine findings.
It is also suitable for clinicians who would like to feel more confident about binocular and functional vision, understand what familiar tests may be telling them, and begin making more informed decisions about assessment and management.
No specialist background in binocular vision or vision therapy is required.
